Failing Sleep Training

Toward the end of March (right before Gerrit turned 5 months), I decided that I was sick of our sleeping arrangement. I hated how our evenings were going, and I was really getting scared that Gerrit was going to sleep in bed with us for the rest of his life (just kidding… a little). So I started tracking his sleep patterns with the plan to start sleep training after we moved into our new house.

While tracking Gerrit’s sleep, I discovered a few things. 1) His sleep “pattern” is all over the place. He really wasn’t all that consistent with times. 2) He wakes up and needs to nurse back to sleep at least 5 times a night. Yikes. 3) This kid hates to nap. Here’s one day as an example:

7:45 AM – wake up
8:50-9:35 – first nap
11:00-11:45 – second nap
1:15-2:00 – third nap
3:45-5:00 – fourth nap
8:15 – bedtime
10:15 – wake to eat
11:35 – wake to eat
2:15 – wake to eat
2:45 – wake to eat
3:00 – came to bed with me (2 more feedings in there)
7:30 AM – wake up

I did the math, and he was napping about 3.5 hours a day and sleeping about 10 hours at night (if you subtract all the time he was awake). Honestly, he was doing pretty well in terms of daytime sleep hours. But all those night wakings? It was rough.

So after tracking his sleep for a little over a week, I decided that we were going to start sleep training on the 1st of April.  A new month, and a fresh start with sleep! We were also in our new house, so we decided to put Gerrit in his own bedroom too. My plan was pretty much the pick-up-put-down method. First, I tried to put him down to sleep drowsy but awake with the goal of him putting himself to sleep. And if he woke up, I would go in and pat him to soothe him. If he got upset, I’d pick him up, calm him down, then put him back down and go back to patting him. I would keep doing this until he fell asleep. I was only tackling nighttime sleep to start with, because I was afraid taking on naps too would be too overwhelming for both of us.

Night #1 was a little rough, but I was determined to see it through. I put him down to sleep at 7:20 PM and he woke up after only 15 minutes. Ugh. Thankfully, he went back to sleep fairly quickly and slept for an hour and a half. Then it took nearly an hour to get him back to sleep. That was tiring. But the next night it took a little less than half an hour to get him back to sleep after that first waking. I was feeling hopeful! But then night #3 it took him nearly two hours to fall back to sleep after that first waking. I was in tears; it was so hard not to just pick him up and nurse him. I knew he was frustrated with me not picking him up, and I was getting more tense the longer it took for him to settle. This lasted about 5 days.

And that’s when I failed sleep training. I went right back to picking him up right away when he cried and nursing him back to sleep. Maybe I just don’t have a backbone when it comes to listening to Gerrit cry and fuss, but I just couldn’t handle it. My goal with my brief attempt at sleep training was to keep Gerrit in his bed until 3 AM before bringing him to bed with me. I think that happened a few nights, but that was it.

But then something happened. Halfway through the month, Gerrit put himself to sleep for the first time since early March! And it was for a nap! I was beyond shocked!

20150415_151620

That night he put himself to sleep 3 times! It took him awhile (30 minutes max), but he was doing it on his own. I was so excited!

Since then, he has put himself to sleep a few times each day. Normally, he will making noises and move around in his crib as his pre-sleep routine. Sometimes he gets pretty loud! Not crying, just making crazy noises. But I never push it; as soon as he starts sounding upset, I go in and offer the boob. If he falls asleep nursing, that’s fine. He has gotten to the point that if he wakes up when I set him down after nursing, he will usually put himself back to sleep quickly. When he doesn’t (usually between 3-5 in the morning), that’s when I take him to bed with me for his last few hours of sleep.

Two days after he put himself to sleep for that nap, he beat his “record” for sleep. I had thought it was so crazy that he would never sleep more than 2.75 hours at a time. Yes, I tracked his sleep for the whole month of April and figured out exactly how long he was sleeping at a time. Those who know me well know that I am crazy enough to do this. 🙂 So 2.75 hours was his record since he was about 3 months old. Well, then he did 3.5 hours one night! I was ecstatic! Sure, 3.5 hours seems pretty short, but it was a huge improvement to me. About a week later he made it 4.25 hours in one stretch of sleep. Progress!

So here I am, typing this up the night before he turns 6 months old. Gerrit is currently taking his morning nap with me, and I encourage him to put himself to sleep for his other 2-3 naps. If he doesn’t, no big deal. But he does take those other naps in his own bed. At night, he sometimes puts himself to sleep and sometimes he falls asleep nursing. He is getting much better at going right back to sleep after nighttime feedings, and he will sometimes put himself back to sleep all on his own. He still wake up 3-4 times a night and usually nurses back to sleep for those. Gerrit usually comes to bed with me between 3 and 5 in the morning, although lately it’s much closer to 5 AM.

Yes, we failed at sleep training. But we’ve also made so much progress this month! I don’t know if it was just Gerrit maturing or if some of my sleep training actually worked, but I can honestly say that his sleep has become much less stressful for me. I’m learning to go with the flow a bit more and let Gerrit have more opportunities to fall asleep on his own. Maybe down the road we will look at sleep training again, but I’m so glad we decided to quit this time!

Gerrit: 5 Months

Sorry this is SO late! My laptop decided to stop working right before Gerrit turned 5 months old, and I was not about to try to work on a lengthy post on my cell phone. Still waiting on my laptop, but now that we’re in our house, we have the desktop computer set up and running. So here is Gerrit’s 5th month… a little belated!

20150327_095320

Age:  5 months on 27 March 2015
Weight: 18 lbs (a guess)
Height: 26″ (another guess)
Teeth: none
Clothing Size: 6 months & 6-9 months
Diaper Size:
size 3
Milestones: going to sleep on his own, laughing, gurgling (all the time), finding his feet, finding his ears

Sleeping: My big fear entering Gerrit’s 5th month was the dreaded 4 Month Sleep Regression. Since Gerrit already wasn’t a big fan of sleep, I was sure this was going to be the end of me. And we did have some rough nights. Thankfully, about a week into the month, we discovered that Gerrit could put himself to sleep. Yeah. How long could he do that and wasn’t telling us?! So that took a huge amount of stress out of my evenings. And then we went back to some rough nights again. But by the end of the month, he seemed to be getting back on track again.

In terms of naps? He started out the month only taking catnaps (about 30-45 minutes long) unless I lay down with him. If I was with him, he could nap for 2 hours or more without waking. During the couple of weeks of restless naps/nights, he would rarely sleep longer than 45 minutes whether I was sleeping with him or not. Now at the end of the month, I typically nap with him for the first nap (which are getting longer again, yay!) and try to get him to sleep on his own for the rest of his naps. It’s a work in progress!

At night, we put Gerrit down around 7pm. We’ve tweaked his nighttime routine just a bit. First I give him his bath followed by applying lotion and putting pajamas on. Then he goes to his daddy for a bedtime story while I put the bath stuff away. After his story, Andrew says goodnight to him, and I take him into the bedroom to put him into his sleep sack. Then I sing him a lullaby while I breastfeed in the dark. Once he’s done nursing, I set him down in his bed. He’s usually pretty much asleep at this point, but if he’s not, he’ll suck on his sleep sack until he falls asleep. If he really wakes up, I let him coo/gurgle/whine for 10 minutes before I head back in to pick him up and get him to sleep. If the whining gets more upset-sounding or he starts crying before than 10 minutes, I go in and get him. I just keep doing that until he’s asleep. Sometimes it takes awhile (one night it was an hour and a half), but eventually he stays asleep. I’m hoping this helps him fall asleep on his own regularly (and for naps).

You may have noticed that we stopped swaddling Gerrit. I first stopped swaddling him during naps; I just put him in a sleep sack. But at night this is how I would swaddle him, since he was too strong to keep swaddled in the Halo ones I was using. Well, one night I decided to just try putting Gerrit to bed in a sleep sack. I would put him in a sleep sack with his arms zipped in. He’s able to get his arms out through the arm holes, but I think he likes having them inside because it provides a little resistance if he startles. He also likes to push the fabric up to his mouth so he can suck on it to self-soothe. This means they get washed pretty frequently (old milk smell… gross), but we have quite a few in different fabrics for different temperatures that we can rotate out.

Anyway, Gerrit still usually eats every 2-3 hours at night. He seems to be reverse cycling, which he started doing awhile ago. In general, I don’t mind it. It keeps me from getting engorged, it means I know he’s getting enough to eat after he has a day of not eating well, and I love breastfeeding him when he’s calm and sleepy. It means he’s not choking because he’s trying to look around instead of eat, and he doesn’t swallow a bunch of air since he isn’t gulping milk down. We’ll see how long it lasts. Hopefully not for months on end, but as long as I’m not working (and can nap), I don’t mind.

Eating: I mentioned in the sleeping section that Gerrit was still reverse cycling at the beginning of the month. I would try to feed him between naps, and he would usually eat for a couple of minutes, but he would eat best when he was going down for a nap. He definitely seemed to eat the most at night though. His best feeding was usually right before bedtime.

I would say Gerrit eats about every 2-3 hours during the day and at night. I’m hoping that he starts stretching out his sleep at night or at least going right back to sleep after feedings.

Mommy Update: Once Gerrit started sleeping better at night, my stress level definitely went down. And when he started waking up all the time, it went back up again. I’ve gotten messages from friends and family offering suggestions, encouragement, and different perspectives, and it definitely helped!

I feel like I’m at a pretty constant weight now. I haven’t had a scale to weigh myself on in awhile, but my clothes all fit the same. I’ve started taking Gerrit out for walks in the jogging stroller, and we both enjoy that time outside. As his wake times get longer, I’m hoping we can walk for longer and maybe start jogging once he’s out of the infant seat.

I’m really starting to enjoy playtime with Gerrit now that he’s getting older! He has started to actually enjoy tummy time a bit more, which makes me really relieved. And he loves grabbing toys and putting them in his mouth.

Best Moments: Playtime with Gerrit. He is getting to be so much fun to interact with! He makes the silliest noises.

Look who's starting to enjoy tummy time!

Likes & Dislikes: Gerrit still really likes standing, but now he also likes taking steps and “climbing” up our torsos. I swear, this kid is going to walk way before we’re ready for it!

He dislikes being left alone. I need to sit and interact with him pretty much all the time if I don’t want to hear him start whining! He also dislikes going to sleep… does that surprise anyone? 🙂

Memorable Events: Gerrit went for his first walks! It was so nice to be outside as the weather warmed up in North Carolina.

Not that we did anything much to celebrate, but Gerrit had his first St. Patrick’s Day:

He also got to welcome his first spring! The weather in North Carolina in spring sure beats spring in England. 🙂

20150323_164022Overall, Gerrit’s 5th month was stressful. I’m not trying to be pessimistic about it, but living out of suitcases in TLF and hotel rooms isn’t much fun. Plus trying to find a house (and bringing poor Gerrit along to see all those houses) and start to get to know the area is tough. But we had plenty of great moments, and Gerrit is proving to have a great personality! We love interacting with him and seeing him learn new things!

Stressed Backwards Is Desserts

If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, you know I’ve been stressing about Gerrit’s 4 month sleep regression. Much more so than I probably should be. But one day last week, I decided I needed a distraction. Baking!

Well, there really isn’t any bakeware here in TLF, so I had to figure out what I could make with the one pan we bought: a 9×9 square baking pan. This was made easier when I noticed I had two really yucky looking bananas on the counter (oops). I have a recipe for Strawberry Banana Bread that uses a 9×13 pan, but I figured I could cut it in half. So here’s the recipe that I made:

2015-03-19 15.04.00Strawberry Banana Bread

Total Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 9

Ingredients:

1/2 c. vegetable oil
1-1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. ground cinnamon
1-1/2 t. baking powder*
1/2 t. ground nutmeg
1/4 t. kosher salt
2 large eggs
3/4 c. granulated sugar
1/2 T. pure vanilla extract
2 large ripe bananas
1/2 lb. strawberries
1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 T. fresh lemon juice

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Oil and flour a 9- by 13-inch casserole dish. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.

2. In a medium bowl, lightly beat eggs. Add granulated sugar, oil, and vanilla and whisk to combine. Mash bananas (you should get about 1 cup) and stir into egg mixture. Add egg mixture to flour mixture and mix just until incorporated. Fold in strawberries.

3. Transfer batter to prepared dish and bake until a wooden pick inserted into center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack and let cool for 5 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice until smooth. Spread icing over warm cake, then let cool completely.

* I accidentally bought baking powder instead of baking soda. After some research, I discovered you could replace baking soda with 2-3x the amount in baking powder. Good to know!

2015-03-20 11.14.56Quick and easy (even with a baby to entertain!), very yummy, and good for breakfast, a snack, or dessert! I love the bits of strawberry and hint-of-lemon glaze that brighten up an already delicious food. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
